Senate Commerce panel meets with industry, academic leaders on ‘transparency’ in AI

A Senate Commerce subcommittee held a wide-ranging hearing on improving “transparency” around artificial intelligence products and services, delving into the role of regulation, data privacy and security and other issues as lawmakers try to fashion a policy approach to AI.

Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO) chair of the consumer protection, product safety and data security subcommittee, called the Sept. 12 hearing a “next step” in building a consensus around AI policy and said Congress’ role is to set “reasonable rules.”
