Biden’s China tariffs support AI development

The Biden administration’s highly touted decision to retain and expand Trump-era tariffs on technologies and products from China includes a doubling of duties on semiconductors critical to the development and use of artificial intelligence.

The White House says an increase in tariffs on semiconductors is “an important initial step” in supporting the administration’s distribution of funds under the CHIPS and Science Act to build out the nation’s capacity for manufacturing AI and other advanced technologies.
