State legislators warn Congress away from pre-emption on privacy, AI issues

The bipartisan National Conference of State Legislatures says Congress must not pre-empt states’ authority to enact artificial intelligence-related laws as federal lawmakers begin another run at passing a national privacy standard.

“A federal data privacy law should not preempt state automated decision-making legislation. States must be allowed to innovate in this area and nimbly adjust to the integration of AI into our communities,” NCSL says in an April 7 submission to the Republican privacy working group launched this year...
