Rise of China’s high-capacity, low-cost AI model casts shadow over export control efforts

The announcement of a highly capable, low-cost AI system by the Chinese firm DeepSeek has led some U.S. policymakers to emphasize the necessity of a dramatic shift from the allegedly risk-averse Biden administration approach to artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on the efficacy of existing export controls targeting China.
