House privacy bill markup canceled amid mounting opposition from business, civil society groups

The House Energy and Commerce Committee abruptly canceled a markup of the American Privacy Rights Act amid opposition from Republican leadership, and with major business groups rallying against the measure as overly prescriptive while civil and digital rights organizations opposed the revised version of the bill that dropped an artificial intelligence-related section on algorithms.

The committee posted that the session had been canceled on the markup page shortly before its scheduled start on June 27.
