Copyright Office calls for ‘digital replica law’ in first part of report on issues raised by AI

The U.S. Copyright Office is emphasizing the need for federal legislation to address inadequate protections in current law regarding “digital replicas,” in the first of a multiple-part report on copyright policies and artificial intelligence.

“This Part of the Report responds to the proliferation of videos, images, or audio recordings that have been digitally created or manipulated to realistically but falsely depict an individual,” the Copyright Office says in a July 31 release.
