Commerce chief Lutnick announces revamp of AI safety institute as ‘standards and innovation’ center

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on June 3 announced the NIST-based AI Safety Institute will be reformed and renamed as the Center for AI Standards and Innovation, or CAISI, under a directive from President Trump to turbo-charge U.S. development of artificial intelligence.

The entity will remain within the National Institute of Standards and Technology and coordinate with other NIST bodies and Commerce agencies such as the Bureau of Industry and Security, according to the announcement.
